Southwest Airlines started out as a small commuter airline in Texas and has since grown into one of the largest carriers in the United States. They now boast an impressive network of flights that extends throughout the contiguous United States, as well as flights to Mexico and the Caribbean.
Southwest will accept small cats and dogs for in-cabin travel only. Reservations can only be booked by calling their Customer Service line ahead of time. They will not accept pets in the cargo hold under any circumstances. Those passengers travelling with pets in-cabin are only allowed one carrier per ticketed passenger. A pet carrier will count as either a carry-on item or a personal item. Approved carriers are available online or at any ticket counter for a fee of $48 (taxes included).

Southwest will not accept pets as checked baggage and will not transport pets via their air cargo service. If your pet will be travelling unaccompanied, you will likely need to make other arrangements.
Southwest currently lists no official codeshare agreements in place with other airlines. However, in 2011 they acquired AirTran Airways. Although AirTran is a wholly owned subsidiary of Southwest, the two are still operating as separate (but co-operative) carriers. Southwest plans to completely integrate AirTran into the Southwest brand by the end of 2014. It is strongly recommended that you contact any other airlines you will be flying with to familiarize yourself with their individual policies regarding pet travel.
